RauviTravels Cancer Diary: My Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Diagnosis

RauviTravels Cancer Diary: My Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Diagnosis

Where would I begin? Ok, I guess I would tell you something about myself first. To begin with, I am Rauvi a.k.a. RauviTravels. I am 37 years young and a single mother of three beautiful children ages 15, 10 and 9. I am a Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner by profession based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. I work both in partial hospitalization program as well as in inpatient and outpatient settings which I really love.

On my way to the hospital to do my rounding.

Rauvitravels is a healthy, outgoing and adventurous person. Moreover, I enjoy my life being a mother, a full-time nurse practitioner and a part-time traveler. I am blessed with the life that I’ve always wanted. Life’s great and awesome. And so I thought. I really assumed I was invincible until life played a big bad joke on me. Unfortunately, I only realized I wasn’t when life tricked me in the way worst possibly imagined. For one, I never thought I would ever write a blog about cancer one day. And never did I imagine that one day, I would write about my own cancer diary and journey.

Well, this is how it all began. On July 4th, I flew to Southeast Asia with my three children in tow for a promise of an epic summer adventure. Everyone was excited to spend three weeks exploring the Philippines and Japan. We climbed mountains, hiked trails, chased beautiful waterfalls, swam with whale sharks, hopped into different islands and enjoyed soaking into equally beautiful white sand beaches. We also enjoyed exploring the bustling and colorful city of Tokyo in our kimono attire. I will definitely write a blog about all the amazing adventures we did in Southeast Asia on my future posts.

I enjoyed my time being cooked and bathe in a ‘kawa’. What I didn’t know however was that a cancer was also cooking inside me.
RauviTravels Cancer Diary: My Hodgkin's Lymphoma Diagnosis
When I thought I was well and healthy. This was four weeks before my cancer diagnosis.

But, fast forward, that awesome adventure eventually ended on July 24th as we headed back home to the US. As expected and scheduled, I went back to work on July 26th very much well and energized. Everything went smoothly up until two weeks later when I started feeling ridiculously tired. So tired that I had to sit on the shower floor because I could not bear standing up while showering. I couldn’t even blow dry my hair due to extreme exhaustion. I thought it was weird but of course, I blamed it on jet lag and shrugged my shoulders off. One week later however, I found myself making multiple stops after taking few steps just to catch my breath. I also had fainting spells when I got up in the morning which I found concerning.

My unwanted visit to my Primary Care Physician

In as much as I wanted to continue shrugging my symptoms off, I knew deep in my heart that something is off. I made an appointment to see my PCP on August 26th. My PCP ordered routine blood tests including CBC, CMP, Lipid, TSH, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 and added urinalysis as expected. Without hearing from my doctor for 3 days, I called his office on the morning of August 29th. The medical assistant told me over the phone that nothing significant turned up but scheduled me to see my PCP the next day anyway as a protocol. That Thursday night however, I had the most painful stabbing chest and back pain I never had in my life ever. I met my PCP the next day and was told my blood work looked insignificant with the exception of elevated platelet.

For some unknown reasons, my platelet has always been elevated since 2014. My PCP though nothing much of it because it would always go back close to normal ranger after a repeat platelet test. Concerned about my chest and back pain the previous night, I requested for EKG and chest x-ray. Result of the EKG showed tachycardia while chest x-ray showed and ‘enlarged spot’. Concerned with what he saw, my PCP told me to go to the closest hospital ASAP. He wanted for me to get a CT (computed tomography) scan of the chest with IV (intravenous) contrast to rule out his concern. I protested at first since it was a Friday with Monday being holiday (Labor Day).

Looking back, I knew something was wrong and I was just in denial. I tried to delay the inevitable apparently. Thankfully, he didn’t take ‘no’ for an answer and even called the hospital in advance so off I went.

My unexpected trip to the Emergency Room

At the Emergency Room, a young good-looking doctor introduced himself and started asking questions.

ER Doctor : “What brought you to the ER tonight?”

RauviTravels: “I’m here because my PCP wanted me to get a CT of the chest with contrast.”

The ER doctor asked me why I went to my PCP in the first. I knew he was asking for my ‘signs and symptoms’. I really wanted to minimize my symptoms out of fear but as a medical professional myself, I know I shouldn’t. I looked back 1-2 months prior for any symptoms I for sure ignored. I work in a hospital and treat patients everyday but I absolutely hate going to a doctor or hospital for myself. I literally have to be in a ‘grave’ condition before anyone can make me go. As they say, medical professionals are the worst patients in the world and I’m one of them for sure. Although I wanted to lie about my symptoms, I also knew telling the truth was my only option. I’m glad I did; it sure saved my life.

My signs and symptoms (that I ignored) include:

  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Drenching night sweats
  • Persistent dry cough
  • Abdominal bloating and discomfort
  • Generalized itching
  • Flu-like symptoms without fever

After listening to my barrage of symptoms, the ER ord doctor ordered for IV access/infusion, vials of blood to be drawn and a CT scan of the chest with IV contrast. While waiting for the CT result, I dictated on all the patients I’ve rounded on that day and finished some charting to pass time. I also purposely worked even with IV and pulse oximeter to distract myself from my raging nerves. By the way, I was all alone during this time.

The scary and inevitable result

After what seemed to be like forever, the ER doctor came back in my room with a dull face and his hands clasped. The first thing he said was ‘I’m sorry’. He did say these words so many times that I felt like they deafened me. I felt my heart racing and felt hot and cold at the same time. It took me a while to answer and ask questions. And my first words were ‘am I dying? What is it?’ He said ‘no’ but told me the result of the CT scan showed a very, very concerning lymphoma which he consulted an oncologist for.

To say that I felt the world came crushing down on me that very moment is an understatement. I felt heartbroken and confused and told him, ‘Dr., do you know that my youngest child is only 9 years old?’ I didn’t even realize I was already crying inconsolably at this point to which he kept saying ‘I’m sorry’. At this time, I told him I work in the medical field myself and requested to read the CT report myself. He nodded and printed it out for me. See below for the result.

What is lymphoma?

  • According to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (2019), “Lymphoma is the name for a group of blood cancers that develop in the lymphatic system. The two main types are Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) and non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL).”

After being told that my extensive mediastinal lymphadenopathy could be lymphoma, the ER doctor pretty much told me I need to be admitted for an in-depth work-up. He told me the oncologist will come by to talk to me in the morning. I didn’t expect this to happen at all. I was looking forward for a Mediterranean dinner that night. I didn’t want to stay but I know I have to.

This is just one of the many chapters of my cancer diary thus far. I will post blog more posts soon. Thank you for reading. Stay healthy y’all!

RauviTravels: My 2018 travel goal of flying around the world monthly

RauviTravels: My 2018 travel goal of flying all over the world monthly

I really think 2018 is and will always be the year I travel the most. For the whole 12 months, I never skipped a month going places may it be just somewhere in the United States or someplace elsewhere in the world. This year, I definitely checked so many things off my bucket list. And it was awesome! It was very exciting to visit some of the most beautiful and romantic travel destinations in the world. Furthermore, I just didn’t get to visit these places, I get to do a lot of fun adventures and stuff. I will always love the crazy and not-so-crazy adventures I have done in the last 12 months. Additionally, I appreciate the opportunity of meeting tons of wonderful people from all over the world throughout my journey. So, here is the breakdown on how I spent each month of 2018 traveling all over the globe. Since I have been to LOTS of places all over the world this 2018, I will have this blog in two installments. This first part of my 2018 travel blog will cover the places I visited from January to June.

My Monthly Travels: January to June 2018

January 2018

Inarguably, watching the epic ball drop at Times Square New York is almost on everyone’s bucket list. And obviously, it was on mine too. I watch it on TV each year and always wondered how does it feel to be actually there. Let me tell you, I was not looking forward being packed in sardines but I was definitely excited to do the countdown and witness the ball drop. I can’t begin to tell you how amazing my experience was and definitely the best way to welcome 2018.

    February 2018

Awww, the month of love….. it was a little bit of a struggle to find the most romantic travel destination to go spend the Heart’s Day. But in the end, I opted for an adrenaline-packed travel adventure in Costa Rica. I’m so glad I chose Costa Rica; it was not just romantic, it was a trip full of so much fun and adventure.

March 2018

March 2018 Spring break in Austin, Texas and Turner Falls, Oklahomaapril.jpgSpring break, YAY! And since my children are off school, I took them on a quick get-away in Austin, Texas. Our first stop, taking my them to commit their first ever crime, vandalism. Thankfully, it is ‘legal’ to vandalize and spray-paint the walls of Hope Outdoor Gallery. As a matter, it is considered a form of art.april2.jpg

Our second stop is hiking at the beautiful Mount Bonnell. This place provides a spectacular view of Austin, Colorado River and its neighboring cities and hills.ap.jpg

My kids love the water so there is no way they will miss the fun at Lady Bird Lake. We ended our day having fun kayaking and canoeing at the lake. And trust me, it was too difficult to pull them kids out of the water. LOL.water.jpgwater1.jpg

Our last stop is a rainy and wet, yet  beautiful hike up on hills to get a good view of the Pennybacker Bridge, Lake Austin and Colorado River. Furthermore, it’s a good location if you want see a beautiful sunset.ap1.jpgap2.jpg

Turner Falls Hike

My 3rd time to visit Turner Falls in Oklahoma but it’s too beautiful it always feels like my first time.

April 2018

Known as one of the seven new wonders of the modern world in 2007, Chichen Itza has always been a place waiting to be checked off my bucket list. I have always been fascinated about Mayan civilization and ruins and I promised myself to visit them one day. And that finally came. In addition, I also went to visit the ruins of Tulum which is perhaps one of the most beautiful ruins I’ve ever laid eyes on. Another thing we did in Mexico which I truly appreciated was cenote-chasing. Mexico has tons and some of the most beautiful sinkholes in the world. I think another place in Mexico not to miss is Isla Mujeres. And lastly, we headed to Cancun and party.

The Ruins of TulumLocated a little over an hour from Cancun is another beautiful ruins called Tulum. In Yucatan Maya language, Tulum means “wall”. It is believed that at one point in time, the site may have been called ZAMA, which means A City of Dawn partly because it faces the sunrise. Tulum proudly stands on a hill facing the east side of the Caribbean Sea. During its time of grandeur, Tulum serves as a seaport trading mostly jade and turquoise. Pictures taken at the ruins of Tulumtulum3.jpgtulum4.jpg

 May 2018

Four years ago, I was so fortunate to spend my 32nd birthday in two of the most beautiful cities in the world, London and Paris. And I have to stay that I fell in love with Europe. It’s so romantic, classic and majestic. Thus I told myself that I will spend another birthday in Europe come high hell or waters. And I did. And again, it’s one of my most amazing birthday celebrations ever! It’s my birth month so YAY Europe! My 9-day birthday celebration in Europe started in Lisbon, Portugal, then flying to Greece visiting the city of Athens and the island of Santorini. Next on my birthday itinerary is a visit to the cities of Rome, Vatican and Naples. After 2 days of devouring the beauty of Italy, we then fly to Barcelona, Spain. Although almost a day was wasted due to a trip to Barcelona Police Station after my stuffs were stolen, we were still determined to move along and follow our itinerary. From Barcelona, we drove to Girona, Spain. Not a fan of the Games of Thrones but it was fun trailing its shooting locations in Girona. From there, we drove and cross the international border to this charming city of Perpignan, south of France. Lastly, we drove at least 4-6 hours (due to multiple stops for picture-taking), to Andorra La Vella, Andora, a small country sandwiched between France and Spain. So that’s how I spent my 36th birthday in Europe.

1st Stop: Portugal

2nd Stop: Greece

3rd Stop: Italy

4th Stop: Spain
5th Stop: Andorra

6th and Final Stop: Andorra

June 2018

Perhaps the most unique and eerie country I’ve been is Iceland. I feel like I’m in Mars; it is so beautiful it is almost un-Earthly. Additionally, I checked off my bucket list of living in a camper van for days. It was so much fun.

Happiness: My Colorful and Fun Photo-Op Experience at Happy Place in Chicago

Happiness: My Colorful and Fun Photo-Op Experience at Happy Place in Chicago

What is happiness? Internet search engines define happiness as “the state of being happy”. But of course.   And that was exactly what I see in this family of four I happened to meet in Sky Deck Chicago. While in line for the obligatory Sky Deck pictures, a blue-eyed cute boy started chatting with me.

Cute little boy: “How are you?”

Me: “I am good. And you”

Cute little boy: I am not just good. I am happy because I went to a happy place today.”

Me: “To where?”

Cute little boy’s mom: “It’s a fun and interesting photo-op place here in Chicago called Happy Place.”

Judging the happiness I see in the little boy’s eyes, I pulled out my phone and started googling for the “Happy Place”.  Located in 1004 N Elston Avenue in Chicago, Happy Place is a pop-up rooms decorated with fun and bright colors. And of course, with happiness! Without further ado, to Happy Place I go!

Happy Place opened in Los Angeles in 2017.  Thankfully, Happy Place wants to spread happiness and decided to take it on a world tour. Making its way from L.A. to Chicago, I was lucky enough to be in the Windy City for my own Happy Place experience. Unfortunately, the Happy Place exhibition in Chicago ends on September 3rd. So, what are you waiting for?

My Happy Place Experience in Chicago

I visited Happy Place in Chicago on August 19th at 11:00 in the morning. Thankfully, it was not a busy considering I went on a Sunday. Give and take, the wait was probably less than 15 minutes. Please note that parking is limited, thus, valet is the way to go. Downside is, it will cost you $12. Additionally, tickets to Happy Place cost $30 on weekdays and $35 on weekends. Please note that reservation and payment could only be made online. Click here to book.

3-day Guided Havasu Falls Hike: Costly but Worthy

3-day Guided Havasu Falls Hike: Costly but Worthy

My 3-day guide hike to Havasu Falls is  probably my most costly hiking trip ever.  And by far my most challenging hike to date. Not only that, it was almost a ‘spur-of-the-moment’ thing. No regrets, though. My hike to Havasu Falls is one of the best trips I’ve taken in my lifetime. I’m writing this blog so you can learn from my experience. That you can definitely get the best Havasu experience, just like I had, without breaking your bank account.

It started with love-at-first-sight turned into an obsession kind of thing. I fell in love with the beauty of Havasu Falls the very moment I saw it online.  Then, I started researching on how to get there. I mean, how to get there ASAP. Bad news is, Havasu Falls permit is one difficult permit to get. Literally, one has to apply for Havasu Falls permit 6-12 months ahead of the intended hike date. Furthermore, your chance to reserve for a spot online is almost as good as slim to none. And getting someone on the phone is like playing hide-and-seek. Of course, that won’t work for an impatient person like me. LOL.

And by the way, to make matter worst, my obsession to hike to Havasu Falls worsen each day. Thankfully though, I found a way how to get around it. That is, to contact a tour guide company and go on a guided hike to Havasu Falls. To sum it up, my obsession costs me $1255+ guided tour fee excluding my airfare, car rental and other miscellaneous.

So, what is the morale of the story? Sounds cliché, but the saying ‘patience is a virtue’ never gets old. Patience could save you thousands of dollars too. LOL. Kidding aside though, I know my hike to Havasu cost a LOT. But, trust me, I would have not have it the other way. My hike to Havasu was beyond amazing I’d say it was a money well-spent.

My Amazing 3-day Hiking and Backpacking Trip to Havasu Falls

3-day Guided Havasu Falls Hike: Costly but Worthy

I spent the night before the hiking trip at Canyon Lodge in Seligman, Arizona. Our tour guide from Pygmy Tour Company picked us up at 0700. There were 5 of us in the group plus our guide of course. After hours of driving, we finally arrived at Hualapai Hilltop. This is the start and end base for all hikes to Havasu Falls. Parking is free but limited. There is a bathroom available to use for free.

The first one mile and a half of the hike is descending down a mountain hiking through the never-ending rocky and sandy trails. Thankfully, you will be hiking with beautiful views along the way; canyons, rock formations, creek, river, etc.

The Tale of my Epic Hike to Havasu Falls

By the way, before I forget,  please get out-of-the-way when you see a barren of mules and horses. Supposedly, hiking trails are to be shared. Interestingly, not in Havasupai.  Havasupai is perhaps one of the very few places on Earth where people do not have the right of way. LOL. If not, be ready to be dragged down and along by the mules and the horses.

Yup, I was running away for my life. LOL.

Finally, I’m almost there after hiking for what seems to be like forever.

3-day Guided Havasu Falls Hike: Costly but Worthy

Unfortunately, the beating, I mean, the hiking doesn’t end here.  Seriously, after hiking for almost 8 miles at this point, I was ready to die. At least, that’s how it felt like. My impending death however was interrupted as I got closer to Supai village. This little village has one hotel/motel, grocery store, post office, school, church, helipad and more.

3-day Guided Havasu Falls Hike: Costly but Worthy
It’s so fascinating to look at Wigleeva. Legend has it that these two stone pillars overlooking the village are tasked to keep them safe.

Finally, after 12 miles and almost 5 hours of hiking, we reached the base camp. The final stretch of the hike, which is about one mile, is where I struggled the most. Literally, at this point, I had to be dragged down up and down the hill to our campsite. In addition to exhaustion, the scorching heat of Arizona in June was too much to bear. Thankfully, I made it to the camp ground alive.

Up to this day, my boss still thinks I’m crazy for doing all that hiking. So, why did I put myself through that trouble and near-death experience? Scroll down to see why…

Epic Los Angeles to Vegas Road Trip and Pit Stop

Epic Los Angeles to Vegas Road Trip and Pit Stop

My first day in California was all about fighting for a spot to different Disneyland Park attractions.  Understandably, it’s summer time so Disney’s FASTPASS service was not even much of a help. Needless to say, it’s not as happy as it should be when you visit Disneyland during this time. No regrets though, everyone had tons of fun regardless.

On our second day, I decided on an epic road trip with my 75-year grandmother, my 53-year old mother and my three hyperactive children from Los Angeles to Vegas. Supposedly, the road trip should only take 4-5 hours depending on the traffic.  Unfortunately, I planned this road trip on a Friday when most Californians drive to Vegas to gamble and party. What was I thinking?

This is actually not my first time to drive to Vegas from Angeles. This time however, I have the who family in tow thus decided for pit stop to break the long drive/

So, with two women with overactive bladder in tow plus a grumpy 14-year old, a 9-year old boy who only cares for hotel wifi access and an 8-year old who wants food every 30 minutes, the road trip was already fun at the beginning.  Thus, this momma had to be creative on how to keep everyone happy and entertained during this 6-hour epic ordeal. I mean, epic road trip. LOL. With that being said, I had to research for some cool pit stop along the way. Depending on your time and interests, there are number of interesting pit stop during your epic Los Angeles to Vegas road trip.

Cool Pit Stop between Los Angeles and Vegas

1st Pit Stop:  Calico Ghost Town

Epic Los Angeles to Vegas Road Trip and Pit Stop

Calico is a former mining town located 3 miles from Barstow, California and 3 miles from Yermo, California. Proclaimed by former Governor Arnold Swarzenneger to be California’s Silver Rush Ghost Town in 2005, it has been become a famous stop-off between Los Angeles and Vegas. Additionally, Calico Ghost Town is California’s Historical Landmark #782.

Epic Los Angeles to Vegas Road Trip and Pit Stop

I almost skipped this attraction due to it being off Highway 15.  It’s about 20-minute drive from the main highway. You definitely won’t miss it as you will the letters CALICO on the mountain slope from the highway. I paid $40 entrance fee for 1 senior, 2 adults and 3 children ages 8, 9 and 14.  At first look, I thought I was back in Texas.  Supposedly, original building were torn down replacing it with Western-themed architecture. As I said, I felt like I am in Wild West Texas.

Epic Los Angeles to Vegas Road Trip and Pit Stop

Unfortunately, our stay at the ghost town was short-lived due to the temperature. It was 112-degree Fahrenheit and my 75-year old grandma was afraid to die of heat stroke. Kidding aside, it was very hot even for a Texan like me. Thus, mission to explore the whole town was aborted. I, however, managed to snap some photos.  If you are brave enough to explore the ghost during summer, drink lots and lots of water. Furthermore, get a good shoes to walk on, apply sunscreen and definitely wear hats.

Epic Los Angeles to Vegas Road Trip and Pit Stop

2nd Pit Stop:  Peggy Sue’s 50’s Diner

Another famous stop-off not far from Calico town is the legendary Peggy Sue’s 50’s Diner. Most especially if you are hungry. Travelers passing between Los Angeles and Vegas should not miss Peggy Sue’s delicious and affordable menu. And not only that, the restaurant’s massive collection of movie and TV memorabiliais truly an eye-candy. Here at Peggy Sue’s, you can enjoy great home-cooked food, great songs from the 50’s, shopping and strolling through the Dinosaur Park.  Clearly, this place caters to traveler of all ages. What are you waiting for?

Epic Los Angeles to Vegas Road Trip and Pit Stop

3rd Pit Stop:  Jenny Rose Restaurant

Just across the street from Peggy Sue’s you will find another famous stop-off. I read some people online asking what makes this place special. Historically, Jenny Rose Restaurant is a roadside diner that has long been closed down. Interestingly, the restaurant’s signage still stand erect, bright and proud. Seriously, don’t you think the red heart Jenny Rose Restaurant’s signage is cute? Exactly, I think so too. Furthermore, Sheryl Crow made the neon sign famous by making it the back cover of her debut album. And yeah, I love some of her songs.

Epic Los Angeles to Vegas Road Trip and Pit Stop

4th Pit Stop:  Zzyzx Road/Soda Springs

Our 4th pit stop is probably the creepiest one. As I drove into a partly paved road with no one in sight, my 75-year grandmother attempted to stop me. I hesitated for a second but my curiosity over this controversial place won over.  For one, I would like to visit the last road name (alphabetically speaking) in the list of all US official roads, the Zzyzx Road. Supposedly, a quack evangelist named Curtis Howe Springer named it with the intention of making it the last road name, alphabetically speaking. This imposter built a resort in the Mojave Desert he named Zzyzx Mineral Springs. This fraudster is smart enough to use water boiler and claimed it to be a hot spring. Genius, isn’t it?

Epic Los Angeles to Vegas Road Trip and Pit Stop

California State University managed the then-Zzyzx Mineral Springs Resort since 1976. Today, it is known as the center for desert studies.

The place is so quiet and creepy to visit. To begin with, I did not see a clear sign whether or not a visit is allowed. There were two cars parked but I did not see anyone. My grandma and mom stayed in the car. My two girls were afraid to explore. We managed to snap few pictures thankfully. As we left, we met a couple asking us the same question, “is it okay to visit?”  They also instructed as to call 911 if they won’t make it out of the center in 15 minutes, LOL. Yeah, that’s how creepy the place was. It was interesting though and beautiful.

Epic Los Angeles to Vegas Road Trip and Pit Stop

5th Pit Stop:  The Mad Greek Café

Another pit stop during our epic Los Angeles and Vegas road trip is a visit to The Mad Greek Café. And yes, their food is ‘madly’ delicious. I devoured a Chicken Breast Souvlaki and drank my fresh strawberry shake to its last drop.

Epic Los Angeles to Vegas Road Trip and Pit Stop

6th Pit Stop: The Tallest Thermometer in the World

Another interesting pit stop during an epic road trip from Los Angeles to Vegas proudly stands in Baker, California. And that is the world’s tallest thermometer showing the maximum temperature of 134 degrees Fahrenheit; the highest temperature ever recorded on planet Earth. By the way, this record-breaking heat occurred at the nearby Death Valley in 1913. Thus, the world’s tallest thermometer is built to commemorate that scorching event. I could not breath with the temperature in 112, how much more if it was 134?

7th Pit Stop: Alien Fresh Jerky Restaurant
Anyone here a fan of alien and UFO’s? The next pit stop could be your favorite. I am neither a fan of alien and jerky but I sure did not miss this alien-themed restaurant. From the aliens standing outside and over the building, to the aliens inside a parked car, this place is definitely interesting. Not to mention the massive selection of jerky flavors available to mankind.

Epic Los Angeles to Vegas Road Trip and Pit Stop

8th Pit Stop:  Bonnie and Clyde Death Car

Bonnie and Clyde are the infamous ‘partners in crime’ who captured the American public with their unspeakable crimes between 1931 and 1935. They started their crime spree in Texas and across state line. Bonnie and Clyde died in May, 1934 in Shreveport, LA. They both died of gun shot wounds, more than fifty times each. And the bullet-ridden car the infamous duo died in became an interesting pit stop between Los Angeles and Vegas. It is conveniently locate inside Whiskey Pete’s Hotel and Casino in Primm, Nevada. Additionally, Clyde’s blood and death shirt is also on display. I know they are cringe-worthy to look at but hey, they are interesting and free.

9th Pit Stop: Seven Magic Mountains

Our next pit stop is probably the brightest and the most colorful one, the Seven Magic Mountains.  After driving for hours along the desert, seeing these colorful stack of colorful stones surely awakened and brightened my ‘tired’ mood. The Seven Magic Mountains are brilliantly created by world-renowned artist named Hugo Rondinone. It is his creative way of showing a colorful human presence in Mojave Desert. Clearly and brightly visible along I-15, you surely would not miss this.  And do hurry up! Sadly, this beautiful creation might only available for viewing until the end of the year.

2nd Day of Exploring the Natural Beauty of Iceland

2nd Day of Exploring the Natural Beauty of Iceland

Welcome back readers! As promised, here is the second installment of my Iceland exploration. By the way, did I mention what I loved about visiting Iceland during summer time? It never gets dark in Iceland during those times. And that was a huge advantage… or maybe disadvantage if you have severe sleep problem like me. But seriously, you could literally explore Iceland 24/7 non-stop if you want to. The only thing that slowed us down was the rain. As a matter of fact, it rained 4 days out of my 5-day Iceland exploration. My 2nd day of exploring the natural beauty of Iceland was cold, windy and rainy. Oh well, for a wanderlust like me, it was ‘rain or shine’. Without further ado, here’s how I spent my 2nd day in amazing Iceland.

By the way, case you missed how I spent my first day exploring the natural beauty of Iceland, click this link.

Day 2: Where did I go and what did I do?

2nd Day Exploring the Natural Beauty of IcelandTo begin with, I have to say that it’s so weird to sleep and wake up to the same ‘bright’ sight. Unfortunately, there is no amount of Tylenol and Motrin PM that could put me down to sleep on a ‘bright’ night in Iceland. Consequently, I wasn’t able to go to sleep until 4:00 in the morning on my first night in Iceland. With that being said, it was a late day for me as I woke up 10:00 in the morning.

2nd Day Exploring the Natural Beauty of IcelandAfter walking up to this beautiful sight, who would want to leave? Our loyal Snail van, however, is ready to hit the road again.

1st Stop: Seljalandsfoss

As I’ve said in my previous post, I could never get enough of the beauty of Seljalandsfoss right? Thus, I went back there the next day circling underneath playing with its sparkling mist. You will get wet whether you like it or not by the way, wearing waterproof from head to toe is almost a must. It was windy, wet and cold. Yet, it was so much fun!

2nd Day of Exploring the Natural Beauty of Iceland
Chasing waterfalls

Here I was standing on a rock close to Seljalandsfoss. And about 560 m. towards the direction those people are heading is our 2nd stop for the day, the Gljufrabui.

2nd Stop: Gljufrabui

My 2nd Day of Exploring the Natural Beauty of Iceland
Gljufrabui

Not too far of a walk from Seljalandsfoss is Gljufrafoss or Gljufrabui, as it is more commonly called. Interestingly, some tourists missed this beautiful spot despite the fact that it is right by Seljalandsfoss. Trust me, I almost did myself realizing it on my drive to Skogafoss after visiting Seljalandsfoss. As a result, I had to make a U-turn to check out this beauty.

Additionally, Gljufrabui is also known as the ‘hidden waterfall’. Partially hidden by canyon of rocks, hikers have to pass through these canyons to see the waterfall.

2nd Day Exploring the Natural Beauty of Iceland

Finally, I am here! Oh Gljufrabui, I almost missed you. Although you are cold, wet and slippery, you are so worth to visit any time of the day.

3rd Stop: Skogafoss

2nd Day Exploring the Natural Beauty of Iceland
Skogafoss

Skogafoss is another beautiful waterfall in Southern Iceland. Again, it is one of the most famous stop-offs on the Ring Road.  As a matter of fact, it is almost a mandatory stop-off due to the fact that Skogafoss is highly visible as you drive on the ring road. Hence, I don’t think anyone could miss it. Additionally, Skogafoss is so beautiful it is definitely a must-see when you visit the southern part of Iceland.

Alternatively, you can also climb up the mountain to see the waterfall in its entirety. The 370 steps to the top of the mountain will not just give you the amazing view of the waterfall. In addition, you will have the opportunity to see the beauty of southern Iceland’s coast line.

Lastly, what is beauty without story, right? Legend has it that the first settler of the town Skogar, named Thrasi, hid a chest of gold underneath the waterfall. Allegedly, three men attempted and failed to recover the chest of gold. Supposedly, the ring to the handle broke up as they were dragging the disappearing chest on the ground. And apparently, the ring was once used as a door handle at Skogar Church.

The following verse pertaining to the legend has passed from generation to generation can be read below:

“The chest in Thrasi’s secret lair

Under the Skogar waterfall

Rewards the one who venture there

With endless riches, great and small.”

Typically, tourists head next to Plane Wreck in Solheimasandur after visiting Skogafoss. Unfortunately, I had to skip this interesting tourist spot due to fear of exhaustion. Finally, ‘jetlag’ caught up with me coupled with the bad weather. Sadly, my 2nd day of exploring the natural beauty of Iceland was short of sunshine. I could do the 2-hour hike both ways but not when it was windy, cold and rainy. I still regret skipping it, but oh well, there’s always a next time.

4th: Solheimajokull

My 2nd Day of Exploring the Natural Beauty of Iceland

Our next stop is Solheimajoskull, a glacier in Southern Iceland. Additionally, Solheimajoskull is also known as the ‘Sinking Glacier of the South’. It is easily accessible but dangerous to explore without expert tour guides. Visiting the Solheimajokull is definitely a must-visit in Southern Iceland.

2nd Day of Exploring the Natural Beauty of IcelandThere is NO FEE to walk along the trail to Solheimajokull. It is not advisable to climb the glacier without proper gears and expertise. Parking is free and there is a bathroom on-site.

SolheimajokullTours to trek up the glacier are available for a small fee. I would love to do hours-long exciting Solheimajokull glacier hike someday. Sometime soon, I would like to climb on that greenish-blue colored glacier. But for now, a walk to the sinking glacier is way more than enough for me. By the way, even from a far, it was beautiful!

5th Stop: Black Sand Beach

My 2nd Day of Exploring the Natural Beauty of IcelandI always love white sand beaches and think they are the prettiest in the world. However, Iceland’s Black Sand Beach makes me think otherwise. Reynisfjara is a well-known black sand beach located in the south coastal area of Iceland. Undoubtedly, this beautiful black sand beach is one of the most famous stop-offs in southern Iceland. It is definitely a must-see tourist attraction. So far, I have to say that Iceland’s Reynisfjara is the most beautiful black sand beach I have ever seen in my life.

Despite of the cold wind and the rain, there is no way I would pass on taking a beautiful walk along the black sand beach.
Furthermore, it’s not everyday that I get to see a beautiful mountain situated steps away from the ocean.
Reynisfjell is a 360 meter high mountain with basalt columns on its base.

2nd Day of Exploring the Natural Beauty of IcelandThese are the basalt columns at the foot of the Reynisfjell. The seemingly picture perfect hexagonal-shaped columns look almost unreal. It’s so amazing to see such beautiful creation. And if that is not beautiful enough, take few more step and you will arrive to yet another magnificent view. Again, it looks so unreal and outwardly.

2nd Day of Exploring the Natural Beauty of Iceland

Finally, my last stop is Reynisdrangar, an amazing stack of rocks off the shore of Reynisfjara beach. Again, what is beauty without a story, right? Throughout the years, legends are told explaining the eerie and unique formation of Reynisdrangar. Old legend tells of a couple of trolls seeing a ship and dragging it to the shore one night. Unfortunately, dawn broke turning the trolls and the ship into stone. Additionally, modern legend tells of a loving husband turning trolls into stone avenging for the murder of his beloved wife.

There is NO FEE to enter Reynifsjara. Parking is free. There is a restaurant on-site. You may use the restaurant bathroom for free. Alternatively, you may use the bathroom outside the restaurant for 200 ISK. Additionally, wide selections of hotels are available in the area.

Accommodation

On my 2nd day, 2nd night rather, of exploring the natural beauty of Iceland, I decided to get a hotel room. Why? In as much as I love my newly embraced campervanning life, I cannot go another day without taking a good shower. Baby wipes are good but no 5 to 10 packs of baby wipes could ever replace a ‘real shower’, LOL. Again, my decision of booking a hotel room last-minute not only cost me a bit of a fortune bust also most of my time. I scoured more than 5 hotels in the town of Vik and called almost 10 until Hotel Dyrholaey confirmed availability. Click the pictures below to see how does a $323 hotel room in Vik Iceland look like.

My 2nd Day of Exploring the Natural Beauty of Iceland

My 2nd Day of Exploring the Natural Beauty of Iceland

Finally, my 2nd day of exploring the natural beauty of Iceland has come to end. In conclusion, my 2nd day of exploring Iceland allowed me to see 5 major tourist attractions. It is important to note that this trip is very chill and laid-back. I made sure to take my sweetest time enjoying each stop-off. While the beauty of the place you visit counts, it is really how you enjoy the places that matters.

5-day Iceland Itinerary: how I spent my first day

5-day Iceland Itinerary: how I spent my first day

Iceland should be in anyone’s bucket list. Why? Read my 5-day Iceland itinerary to the land of fire and ice to know why. This blog will talk on how I spent my first day in Iceland out of five day. I have to do my 5-day Iceland itinerary blog in ‘installments’ since there are lots to talk about and cover. Don’t fret though, this this is a very relaxed and underwhelming 5-day Iceland itinerary. With that being said, this 5-day Iceland itinerary is perfect for first-timers like me.

Iceland has always been a dream destination for me. For months, I have been reading just about anything and everything about Iceland. And when I saw my friend Kat’s Iceland pictures (beautiful pictures by the way), I told myself “forget California/Nevada/Arizona this month and off to the land of ice and fire you go!” You see, I was planning for a West Coast trip for my month of June travel, not Iceland.

To begin with, I have to say that flying to Iceland is one of my ‘spur-of-the-moment” decisions in life. As a result, my plane ticket was definitely not in the $350-$500 range, which by the way is very possible if you just plan an Iceland trip way ahead of time (unlike me). Click here for Iceland adventure deals.

Second, the challenge for me was planning on what am I gonna do and where am I gonna go in Iceland. Yeah, yeah, yeah,  I have been reading about Iceland so I should know. Well, that wasn’t quite the case for me. Unfortunately, I had to work straight up until to the very last minute before take-off.  Yes, I’m a soldier. LOL.

To see how I spent my first day out of my 5-day Iceland itinerary, read on.

My trip to Iceland began in Dallas, Texas where I am based. UP, UP and AWAY, YAY!  I left DFW International to Reykjavik/Keflavik International Airport on June 19, 2018 @ 1630 and landed Reykjavik-Keflavik International Airport on June 20th at 5:30 in the morning.

5-day Iceland Itinerary
Welcome to Iceland!

DAY 1: Where did I go and what did I do on my first day in Iceland?

Finally, I’m in Iceland, yay! After collecting all my luggage, I headed to Flybus kiosk and bought bus tickets for BSI Terminal in downtown Reykjavik. Click here to view bus ticket prices. As soon as you get out of the airport, turn right and you will see the bus stop. There are conflicting stories how long the wait is. In my case, it was less than 5 minutes and the drive to BSI Bus Terminal itself took about 40 – 45 minutes. There, I met the owner of Snail company to pick up our rented camper van. I have always wanted to do ‘campervanning’. And where’s the best place and perfect time to do it? Of course, Iceland!

5-day Iceland Itinerary
Our camper van comes with: (1) bed sheets, (2) sleeping bags, (3) camping tents, (4) folded table, (5) camping chairs, (6) cooking stove, (7) mini fridge, (8) gallon of water, (9) pots, pans, cooking utensils, (10) cooking containers, (11) detergent soap (12) poncho

Please note though that most vehicles in Iceland are operated manually. Trust me, you would not want to be put in the van company’s ‘hall of shame’ and be rescued by ‘Donald the Dumb Truck’. LOL. In Iceland, drive a manually-operated vehicle at your own risk. At least they don’t require you to have an international driver’s license like other European countries.

5-day Iceland Itinerary
Meet Donald, the Dumb Truck

1st Stop: Thingvellir National Park

Call it a ‘first-timer move’ or ‘doing it by popularity’ but I have decided to start my journey traveling the famous route, the Golden Circle. Aside from its immense beauty, Thingvellir National Park is also a historical site. Declared as UNESCO world heritage in 2004, many of Iceland’s historical moments took place here.  Interestingly, Vikings used to hold meetings here too. And if you want to walk, swim and dive between two continents in seconds or in minutes, this is the place to go.

5-day Iceland Itinerary
Thingvellir National Park

Pictures taken during my visit to Thingvellir National Park.

There is no fee to enter Thingvellir National Park. However, parking is not. And make sure to pay. Someone is going around leaving traffic tickets on windshield wipers. Bathroom is available for 200 ISK. There is an onsite café/restaurant and souvenir shop.

2nd Stop: Geysir Hot Spring

A famous stop along the Golden Circle, the Geysir Hot Spring, is a geothermal field spewing water into the air every 5-10 minutes. It was pretty interesting to see! I love the anticipation from people as they wait for that ‘boiling and gushing’ moment.

5-day Iceland Itinerary

5-day Iceland Itinerary

There is no fee in entering the Geysir Hot spring field. Parking is free. There are hotels, restaurants, café, Icewear store/souvenir shop and gas pump on-site. Bathroom use is free.

3rd Stop: Gullfoss

Considered to be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland, if not the most, Gullfoss, is our 3rd stop. It is not a far of a drive from the Geysir Hot Spring area. When I first saw the waterfall, I though it was big and mighty. Hence, some people call it the ‘mighty waterfall’ as oppose to ‘golden waterfall’ which is the English translation for Gullfoss. What makes it special is the beautiful bow or arch of colors hovering over the beautiful and mighty Gullfoss waterfall during summer time. A phenomenon we all know as rainbow. Isn’t it beautiful?

5-day Iceland Itinerary
Legends has it that there is always a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. But trust me, I am not going to look for it in Gullfoss. LOL.

No fee to see the Gullfoss waterfall. And parking is free too. There is no bathroom and no restaurant on-site.

4th Stop: Kerid Crater

Kerid Crater is one of two tourist attractions in Iceland that require entrance fee. It is beautiful, unique and charming. Those blue-green waters complement the brown and deep red-orange slopes surrounding it.

5-day Iceland Itinerary

It is a good spot to do a short hike in summer time. Apparently, to get married too. See the people down on the left holding an intimate wedding ceremony. It was a beautiful sunny day! By the way, it was the only sunny day I got to enjoy out of my 5-day Iceland itinerary. The rest were all rainy, muddy, windy and cold.
Entrance fee to Kerid Crater is 400 ISK. Parking is free. NO restaurant and NO bathroom on-site.

5th Stop: Urridafoss

Our 5th stop is a lesser known but very beautiful waterfall called Urridafoss. When we went there, there was no one but us. There is a picnic table overlooking the serene Urridafoss waterfall and Pjorsa River, the longest river in Iceland. It is considered to be one of the mighty waterfalls of Iceland. Furthermore, Urridafoss is considered to be Iceland’s most voluminous waterfall.

5-day Iceland Itinerary

5-day Iceland Itinerary

It very was beautiful and serene. I love the ‘mini’ waterfalls you see on the riverbank. Additionally, I love the wild yellow flowers and the beautiful lupines which make this waterfall more beautiful that it already is. And it was very relaxing too!
Apparently, Urridafoss is also famous for another activity which you might enjoy; fishing for salmon during summer time.

6th Stop: Seljalandsfoss

Finally, our 6th and last stop for the day is Seljalandsfoss. Inarguably, Seljalandsfoss is one of the most beautiful waterfalls and Iceland. Furthermore, it is one of the most visited waterfalls in the land of ice and fire. Located near the Ring Road, this waterfall is very accessible and convenient to visit. It was tall, beautiful and fun! I loved going underneath it and getting wet with its mist. With that being said, prepare to visit in full ‘battle gear”, in your rain pants and jackets. I really had fun going underneath and around Seljalandsfoss.

Thankfully, there is a shop and café on-site. There is a bathroom for 200 ISK. Parking is available for 700 ISK. There is also a camping ground nearby with the beautiful view of Seljalandsfoss. How awesome is that? Camping fee is 1.500 ISK for each person with additional fees on available amenities.

Honestly, I couldn’t get enough of Seljalandsfoss that I actually came back for more fun the next day.

Major depressive disorder: are you suffering from it?

Major depressive disorder (MDD) has been the center of dialogue lately due to recent suicide deaths by famous TV personalities. In less than three months, three deaths rocked the entertainment and fashion industry.

Avicii, a famed Swedish musician tragically took his own life on April 20th. And on June 5th, famous bag designer Kate Spade also ended her life. Those who were close to them are shocked and confused. As the world processed Kate Spade’s “untimely’ demise, grief poured once again with yet another suicide. Emmy-award winning host, Anthony Bourdain, hanged himself on June 8th. But, why? What drove the famous DJ, bag designer and celebrity chef to commit suicide?

People shared their own two cents and drew their conclusions. Everyone has his own theory to claim. Arguably however, everyone agreed that Avicii, Kate Spade, and Anthony Bourdain share one thing in common. They all struggled with depression. That is to say, all three fought their own demons.

Major depressive disorder: a mental illness

Before I start, please note that “all views in this blog post do not intend to replace professional medical advice, diagnosis and treatment. All information in this post is for general information purposes only.”

What is Major Depressive Disorder?

MDD is a mental illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act (American Psychiatric Association, 2017). To point out, MDD is not just being lonely and occasionally sad. MDD is an overwhelming feeling of sadness that lasts two weeks or longer.

To meet the criteria for MDD, five (or more) symptoms be present during the same 2-week period. Additionally, one of the symptoms is either (1) depressed mood or (2) loss of interest or pleasure (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).

Depression is real.

Signs and Symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder

Associated symptoms include:
(1) depressed mood most of the day, nearly everyday
(2) loss of interest on things previously enjoyed
(3) significant unintended weight loss or decreased appetite
(4) not sleeping or over-sleeping almost every day
(5) psychomotor retardation and agitation
(6) extreme fatigue or loss of energy
(7) feelings of guilt and worthlessness
(8) poor concentration
(9) recurrent thoughts of suicide.

Behavioral Signs of Suicide

While most suicidal people (not all) do not talk about feeling suicidal, their behaviors do. Common suicidal behaviors include oversleeping or not sleeping at all, social isolation, feeling hopeless about the future, making surprise visits, making goodbye phone calls, increase in substance abuse, giving away significant possessions, accessing deadly weapons, making reckless decisions, engaging in risky behaviors and talking about death more than the usual.

Treatment for Major Depressive Disorder

Thankfully, there are so many options available to treat MDD. Evidence-based treatment includes psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, phototherapy, exercise, and brain stimulation therapies. Acupuncture, meditation, faith and nutrition are also used as alternative options.
And if you or your loved ones suffer from severe depression and recurrent thoughts of suicide, seek professional and medical help immediately. Additionally, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

RauviTravels to 6 European countries in 9 days

It has been 3 years since the last and the first time I’ve been to Europe and I thought it was high time to go back. And when is the perfect time to visit again? Of course on my birthday just like the first time I went to visit Europe.

Thankfully, my awesome boss (though reluctantly) said YES to my 10-day vacation request. YAY! So how did I visit 6 countries in 10 days? Continue reading to find out. This blog will briefly explain how I did it.

(1st DAY)

On May 10th, I left Boston Logan International Airport for Athens International Airport with an 18-hour layover in Portugal landing at 6:05 in the morning of May 11th. With my quick stop in Portugal, I was able to explore its capital city of Lisboa (Lisbon) and its neighboring town, Sintra. And it was amazing!,/.

lisbon4
I thought it was misspelled at first but no; Lisboa is the Portuguese word for Lisbon.

Some of the MANY pictures I’ve taken while in Portugal

(2nd DAY)

I left Lisbon Airport at 11:50 on May 11th and landed Athens at 05:45 in the morning on my birthday. YAY! Without any further ado, I spent my 36th year on Earth exploring the mystical city of Athens. Happy birthday to me! Happy birthday to me! Happy birthday, happy birthday…. Happy birthday to me!!!!

(3rd DAY and 4th DAY)

At 5:15 in the morning of May 13th, RauviTravels flew to one of my dream destinations, the island of Santorini. Yay!!!!

Beautiful sunset in Santorini.

I actually contemplated on visiting Santorini at first as I initially decided on seeing the Grand Canal in Venice. Unable to make a decision on my own between Santorini and Venice, I opened a poll on Facebook and let my friend decide my fate. And Santorini it is!

(5th, 6th and 7th DAY)

I bid farewell to Athens on May 15th landing at Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport (Rome) at 10:10 in the morning. Rome and Naples did not disappoint me, not at all. It was what I have always imagined it to be, BEAUTIFUL and HISTORICAL!

italy1.jpg

(7th DAY)

Again, with great sadness, I had to say goodbye to Roma, Italia so I could say hello to my destination, Espanya landing Barcelona at 5:00 in the afternoon on May 17th. With Spaniards colonizing most part of the world, including my native country, Philippines, I’ve always been told that my paternal side of the family (originally from Zamboanga) are partially Spanish descents. Go figure! Without hearing my ‘exotic accent’ first, people in the US would often mistake me as Colombian/Portuguese/Hispanic before guessing I’m an Asian. But sadly, the country that I’ve always curious to visit caused my greatest mishap in this whole entire trip. That part of my story would further be explained on my next blog. Hint: I didn’t plan on going straight to the police station as soon as I landed Barcelo Airport nor planned on buying stuffs from head to bottom.

(8th and 9th DAY)

I originally planned on exploring Girona and Costa Brava but sadly, I had to take the latter out of my itinerary due to the unfortunate event I experience as soon as I landed Barcelona. But the cool thing is, I was able to explore 3 countries in a day as I drove crossing the borders of Spain, France and arriving Andorra at 9:00 in the evening on May 18th.

Our plan is to wake up very EARLY on the morning of May 19th to explore more of Andorra but I guess the ‘trip exhaustion’ finally took a toll on us waking up very LATE instead. So it was really a quick stroll in the beautiful capital city of Andorra la Vella to make it back to Barcelona for our 6:00PM flight back home.

The beautiful city of Andorra la Vella

Lost in this charming city of Perpignan in Southern France

(10th DAY)

American soil finally…… If my boss would see these pictures, he would certainly joke that that it was me crashing down to a depressive state after a 9-day manic episode, LOL. It was a tiresome 9-day alright but I would not have it the other way. It was an amazing trip and I would love to do it again soon!

Welcome to UK, Love!

london

I’ve done few to many immigration/security checks in my life but I was never called “Love” by an immigration officer before. Usually, it’s a grumpy-looking officer with a flat affect and monotone voice. However, in UK, they warmly welcome you with the sweetest smile and the sweet word of endearment. I love British people, very warm and friendly!

If there’s one world to describe the place, it would be the word MAJESTIC! I have always been fascinated about royalties, monarchies, kings, queens, princesses, princes, etc. and it was very amazing for me to see the grandiosity of it with my own two eyes. There is one part of the tower called “The Crown Jewels” which is used for security storage of the precious ceremonial objects.

Picture-taking is not allowed in this room but I was able to sneak and snap some photos. There were crowns with thousands and thousands of diamonds in them I thought they were soooo grand! Big Ben and The House of Parliament

bigben

Although it is still unclear up to this where the nickname Big Ben originally inspired from, the Elizabeth Tower or St. Stephens Tower (Big Ben’s other official names) is inarguably one of the most famous landmarks not just in Europe but around the world. Currently, Big Ben holds the record for being the largest four-faced chiming clock in the world and is one of the top tallest free-standing tower in the world.

Famous Red Telephone Booth

redphone

With the popularity of wireless and smart phones, the use of London red telephone both fared badly over time. Thankfully, the effort of Britons to keep this iconic symbol is stronger than the popularity of mobile phones. Thus, a number of red telephone booths are still present around London while some have been transformed into ATM machines, solar-powered mobile chargers, sofas, and more.

Tip: In front of the Big Ben sits the most photographed crimson-colored phone booth in London.

There are so so many tourist attractions and famous world landmarks to see in London I tell you. Part 2 of my London trip coming up soon!

And I reckon that London is such an exquisite and regal city to see and visit!
